Roses in our garden: Rugosa Alba

The Rosa rugosa 'Alba' (White Ramanas Rose or Japanese Rose) is a tough, exceptionally hardy, and vigorous deciduous shrub rose native to eastern Asia. It is highly valued by gardeners for its combination of delicate, paper-white summer blossoms, tough disease resistance, and vibrant autumn interest.

Key Characteristics & Seasonal Highlights

Flowers: Produces large, single, five-petalled flowers up to 8–10 cm across. The petals are a pure, translucent white with a crepe-paper texture, contrasting with a central cluster of cream-yellow stamens.

Fragrance: Emits a powerful, sweet, traditional Old Rose scent that fills the surrounding air throughout the summer.

Autumn Hips: As summer fades, the flowers develop into exceptionally large, glossy tomato-shaped hips that turn brilliant orange-red. These hips provide a vital food source for birds and are edible for humans (often used for syrups or jams).

Foliage: The leaves are distinctly wrinkled ("rugose"), tough, and a deep leathery green. In autumn, the foliage turns a striking, bright butter-yellow before dropping
